About this place
Karaka-men layers the savoury depth of tonkotsu with the tingle of mala seasoning and aromatic spices. Ippudo’s menu describes a bowl in which the pork-bone broth and spicy fragrance unfold with each mouthful, alongside the texture of seasoned minced meat, mizuna and white spring onion. One diner who tried it thought the flavour was reminiscent of mala tang, making it an option for a day when you want heat and spice. There are also versions with egg or extra chashu, for those who would like more toppings.
Shiromaru Motoaji and Akamaru Shinmi are two familiar choices to suit different tastes. Shiromaru Motoaji comes with pork loin chashu, spring onion and wood ear mushrooms; for a simpler bowl, there is Shiromaru Simple, topped with a single slice of pork loin chashu. A diner who tried Kiwami Shiromaru found it mellow, with the richness of tonkotsu and a clean finish. Another said Akamaru’s depth suited their taste, and remembered its thick-cut chashu for its tender, almost melting texture. Prefer a mellow take on tonkotsu, or the richer Akamaru? That contrast can be a useful starting point if you are choosing for the first time.
Add Hakata bite-sized gyoza or a rice dish if you would like something alongside your ramen. The menu describes the gyoza as bite-sized, with a crisp seared exterior; a half portion is available. Options for rice include mentaiko rice and Chashu Maze Gohan, rice topped with chopped chashu coated in a sweet-and-savoury sauce. Either makes a fitting addition if ramen alone does not feel quite enough.
One visitor reported ordering on a tabletop tablet and helping themselves to spicy bean sprouts, spicy mustard greens and pickled ginger from a self-service station. The restaurant is inside Tennoji Mio Plaza and has counter seating, which is noted as convenient for dining alone. Whether you are stopping for lunch between shopping or looking for a quick solo bowl, there are choices ranging from Shiromaru to the more fiery karaka-men.
